A young woman receives a head injury in an automobile accident and becomes like a six-year-old. She leaves the hospital unattended and ends up in a brothel. She is rescued by a young man who takes her to his home in the mountains. Meanwhile, her parents and the police are looking for her, and just as she is cured, they come to take her back to Bombay. The film is a remake of the 1982 Tamil film Moondram Pirai. Sridevi's autistic child-woman performance won her the Best actress Filmfare Award and National Award nomination as well as receiving State awards, Kamal's performance in the film's famous climax scene won him the National Award in the Tamil version. The film however flopped at the box office as it was considered way ahead of its time. But over the years the movie has achieved cult status and is regarded as an all time classic featuring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi's career best performances.

हे अभी ये फिल्म मेरे दिल को छू गई थी और मुझे लागता तुम सोमू जैसे हो. ये सोचानेवली बात हे कि आज के समाज में सोमू जैसे मर्द कितने होंगे ?? ऐसी फिल्मे आज कल देखने को मिलती नही. तुम्हारे "Apmhitheatre " के मध्यम से फिरसे ऐसी फिल्मे दोस्त लोग देख सकते हैन. तुम रिलीज करते रहो.
