Raag Yaman is a later evening raag which is very
romantic in nature. This raag is often taught to beginners in Hindustani
music. Some say its origin is from the Persian mode "Ei'man" from which
"Yaman" originated. Others say it has Vedic origins as Raag Yamun which
over time altered as Yaman.
Moods: bhakti, gambhir, shringar, serene, haunting This raag is also called Kalyan or Yaman-Kalyan. The raag has all shuddha swars except for the tivra Ma. It is this note which gives the raag its distinctive quality of peace, and tranquility. Some modernists consider Yaman, Yaman-Kalyan, and Kalyan to be one raga and only traditionalists consider these as three distinct ragas. Raga Yaman-Kalyan in avraoh, if mM is used instead of M, the raag becomes Yaman-Kalyan

Raag Yaman are rendered and sung in many hindi movies such as song 'Jab
dip jale ana' sung by Yesudas, composed by Ravindra Jain for the movie
'Chit Chor' and ghazals such as, 'Ranjish hi sahi, dil hi dukhane ke
liye aaye' composed and sung by Mehdi Hassain.
I have compiled
the video on Raag Yaman, rendered by Pandit Sanjeev Abhyankar with
vilambit followed by drut on "Eree aali piya bin".
